NATURAL RESOURCES AND WATERCRAFT DESIGN
WELCOME TO THE NINETH YEAR OF BLENDING SCIENCE AND ART AT SUPERIOR CENTRAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN MICHIGAN'S UPPER PENINSULA.
HOME OF THE COUGARS!
Water Resources
For more than 20 years, the students of Superior Central have been monitoring the health of the school's own Quarry Pond and the nearby Slapneck River. Properties such as nitrates, phosphates, pH, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, and temperature are tested every fall. We can proudly boast that these two bodies of water have always tested well within healthy parameters. The students also catch the Aquatic Benthic Macroinvertebrates living in each location. By identifying and grouping these organisms into groups of various water quality sensitivity, we are able to corroborate the conclusion of the previously mentioned tests. |
Building Our Pirogues Step by step, the student's boat come together as the school progresses. By early May, simple dimensional lumber will be turned into sleek watercraft capable of carrying their builders on a lifetime of exploration. |
