THE fourth CLASS - 2018/19
-Slide Shows-
Each of the following subjects is followed by a group of photos that can be viewed as a slide show by clicking anywhere on the photo then clicking on the "play" button.
SC students have been monitoring the water quality of the school's Quarry Pond and Slapneck Creek for the past 15 years. Several years ago we joined the MiCorp collaboration and this year we added an underwater ROV to our testing array.
Each fall, Natural Resources and Agriculture students team up to pick, grind and press apples from our school's own apple trees to make delicious cider. |
Early each fall, the students of the new class take pirogues that have been constructed in the past for a test drive on the Quarry Pond. Any nervousness of paddling a small boat is quickly lost as they explore and race about.
Superior Central has over 2 miles of Nature and Fitness trails on its property. A bit of maintenance and improvements are needed each year. |
BOAT BUILDING
Building each student's pirogue, paddle and seat is approached as a team process that starts in the fall and finishes in the spring when the final coats of paint are applied.
INDEPENDENT PROJECTS
Each student is required to identify an issue within our local environment, school or community then design a solution to improve that issue and by year's end, implement that solution. Below you will find a description of each student's project. As each project develops, a slideshow following each students progress will be posted.
Sophia and Charlotte are monitoring the water quality and fish in the large boiler room aquaponics system. This system also produces watercress which is harvested for our salad bar.
Aurora, Bailey and Abbey are researching the evolution of design and use of the Punt Boat. Working in collaboration with Ducks Unlimited, they will build a duck hunting punt to be used as a habitat restoration fund raiser. Avery and Jeremy are continuing our work on improving the aquatic habitat of the Quarry Pond for tits resident fish. Our underwater ROV will be used to survey the results of their work. |
Wyatt is maintaining our wind turbine as well as installing a few donated solar panels that will charge the batteries used to power the aquaponics system located in our classroom.
Alayna and Jordan are researching U.P. bats and how White Nose Syndrome is effecting populations. They are also building Bat Houses to improve the chances of their survival in the wake of this fungal disease. Luke is doing research on ruffed grouse habitat, with special emphasis on nesting requirements. This spring he will be working in the school's aspen stand creating potential nesting sites. |
Spring Presentation Night Each year the students showcase their boat-building skills and Conservation Projects to the community. |
Annual Trip to the Basin The following slide show follows the class along their springtime voyage and camping on the Autrain Basin. |
